"How to score higher on Google - Guaranteed!" Or so claim many
companies that specialize in optimizing your site for search engines.
But beware, choose the wrong company and you could lose big.
What many people don't understand is that
Google, the largest and currently the number one search engine on the internet,
has long been cracking down on companies and websites that abuse and
misuse keywords, url forwarding and bait and switch techniques.
The best way to understand what we're talking about is to think of
someone trying to find an amusement park and they type in a search
query, like,
"Best Roller Coaster Ride in the US."
Now suppose, instead of the results you get now on Google, you get a
list of porn sites. Not good. It's not what you are looking to find.
The techniques used by unscrupulous optimizers in fact have yielded
such results.
People searching for cars have been given pages selling them life
insurance. Looking for flowers? Well, how about a chance to win a trip
to the Bahamas. Trying to find a nice vacation spot? How about a round
or two of internet poker.
You get the picture.
The way pages get ranked is by using algorithms that test pages for
authenticity. What good is a search engine if it cannot give you what
you are truly seeking?
So what most of the optimization companies do is try to trick the
optimization algorithm into thinking that their page is more authentic
and valuable than a competitors page. The operative word here is,
"trick."
As
reported by the Wall Street Journal, it's when companies use tricks,
instead of authentically presenting who they are and what they offer,
that gets not only them but their clients into hot water.
And how much do clients pay for this optimization? Anywhere from $2500.00 a month to over $10,000 a month or more!
It's not worth it.
